The New Year sales mix the end of Christmas clearance, the start of the January white sales on bedding and towels, and resolution deals on fitness gear. They run from New Year's Eve to the first weekend of January, then carry on at a lower pitch to MLK weekend in mid-January.
White sales: the oldest sale in the calendar
Department stores have run January sales on sheets and linens since the 1870s, when most linens were white, and the name stuck. Sheets, towels, pillows and duvet covers are still among the best buys of the month. Look at the fabric, not just the thread count: 100% cotton or linen breathes best.
Resolution gear without the regret
Treadmills, smartwatches and activewear are discounted to catch New Year resolutions. Buy for the exercise you already do, not the one you plan to start, and check the return window before you order something heavy. Gyms often waive sign-up fees in January too.
What to leave for later
- Mattresses and large appliances: better discounts usually come on MLK weekend in mid-January and Presidents' Day in February.
- TVs: last year's models fall ahead of the Super Bowl, but Black Friday is usually still cheaper.
- Snow gear and luggage: often cheaper in March, when demand drops.
